Many Nigerians have been victims of phone theft, with criminals stealing phones for the purpose of reselling. This article gives the steps to tracking a stolen phone using it’s IMEI number.
IMEI which stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity is a unique 15-digit code authorized by GSMA, just like an identity certificate for a phone. Every time a phone uses a Network (e.g MTN) to make or receive a call or message, its IMEI number is automatically emitted and traceable.
Service providers have databases in which these IMEI numbers fall into black or white lists, an owner can report his/her IMEI number and have it blacklisted after a theft.
The IMEI number of a phone is usually found on the reverse side of the phone, under the removable battery or (if the phone uses already stolen) on the phone pack label.
Now if the phone is stolen, one could use the IMEI number and an IMEI tracker app to find the phone or render it useless to the thief. The IMEI tracker app can be found in Google play, advisable the ‘Anti-theft App &IMEI Tracker all phone location’ app. After installation of the app , give the permission that it asks for and follow the process.
It is worth noting that the IMEI number of a phone can be changed if in the hands of professionals. So don’t wait till it is too late after the phone is stolen.
