Angel Di Maria has spoken out on the problems he faced at Manchester United ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League clash with the Red Devils. The Argentine signed for the Red Devils under Louis van Gaal, who described the forward – United’s most expensive player at the time – as “world class”.
But things just didn’t work out for Di Maria at Manchester United, and after just one season at the Old Trafford club the £60million winger was sold to Paris Saint-Germain. The French champions are without Neymar for Tuesday night’s clash with Man United and Di Maria is in line to come up against his former team.
Ahead of the last-16 match Di Maria spoke about his time at Old Trafford on radio station France Bleu. The Argentine said: “I only stayed one year. It wasn’t the best period of my career, or they didn’t let me have my best time there. “There were problems with the coach at the time. But thanks to God, I was able to come to PSG and be myself again.”
United go into the match in astonishing form with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having guided his side to ten wins in their last 11 in all competitions. PSG meanwhile have won their last two after losing 2-1 to Lyon in the league, but boast some sensational players in their ranks.
In the 2014 UEFA Champions League Final against Atlético Madrid on 24 May 2014, Di María dribbled past three players before producing a save from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. However, Di María’s teammate Gareth Bale, was there to head the rebound into the net in the 110th minute, giving Real Madrid a 2–1 lead over Atlético in an eventual 4–1 win. Di María was named man of the match by UEFA after the match, and was presented with the honour by former Manchester United head coach Sir Alex Ferguson.
At United, On 4 January 2015, Di María returned from injury to score a late goal in a 0–2 win against Yeovil Town in the third round of the FA Cup. A week later, he was used as a forward by manager Louis van Gaal in a 0–1 home defeat to Southampton. This new role came in the midst of a bad run of form for Di María, who was said to have struggled since October. Di María was sent off on 9 March as United lost 1–2 at home against Arsenal in the FA Cup sixth round, being booked for diving and for grabbing the shirt of referee Michael Oliver, but earlier set up the equaliser by Wayne Rooney. At the season’s end, Di María was judged by pundits and journalists to be the worst signing of the season
