ASUU advises Fed Govt on re-opening of Schools

Sequel to the plans of the Federal Government to reopen schools, months after institutions have been shut down due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has kicked against the process.

Speaking with newsmen in Ota, Ogun State, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU National President, disclosed that the association is against the reopening of schools at the moment.

He claimed that serious issues that are supposed to be dealt with at the moment in the education sector need to be resolved before the government starts the process of reopening schools.

He explained further that the federal government needs to provide an environment that would enable the lecturers and students to abide by the measures that was outlined by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), before schools are re-opened.

In his words, he said, “The Federal Government must lead and show the ways by meeting the conditions for reopening of schools before any school can be allowed to open, because COVID-19 pandemic is a health challenge.

“When it comes to public health, it is something that should not be left in the hands of individual, but the Federal Government must take the lead,’’ he said.

Citing the measures outlined by the NCDC before schools are re-opened, such as provision of materials for regular washing of hands, face mask, isolations centres, space for social distancing and hand sanitisers, the ASUU President explained that most Nigerian Universities would not be able to Cope financially.

He added that many schools do not have enough spaces to promote physical distancing, thereby the lives of students would be endangered in the process.

“It is suicidal to reopen schools now, if the Federal Government itself could not meet the conditions spelt out by NCDC and World Health Organisation (WHO).

“The nation will expose the innocent children to risks which is avoidable,” he said.
